God and LOTR Pt. 1

I'm going to do something different today. Let's try a visual exercise, shall we?

What does this picture say to you?

Whether or not the films (or this particular scene) stick out in your mind, this image conveys so many beautiful things. Let's explore them a bit.

What does such an action as kneeling upon one knee convey? Often we see this action in marriage proposals, but it is not necessarily just for such a commitment. Taking someone's hand, and holding their gaze with kindness and compassion, as is being done here, is a sign of loyalty and friendship, such as only God could create between two such friends. A strength is found here, a great strength and maturity and loyalty in friendship that only true relationships can really convey in any accuracy as God originally intended.

What else can be said in such an action? This is not the first time Aragorn has knelt upon one knee to Frodo; he did so also at the Council of Elrond, when he promised Frodo his sword, saying, "If by my life or death I can protect you, I will. You have my sword."

What happened just before this scene? Boromir, in an awful way, tried to take the Ring from Frodo, and, thank goodness, failed. But this did not leave Frodo unscarred. Already questioning Aragorn's loyalty because of the evil powers of the Ring, Frodo needed reassurance of Aragorn's original promise, that whole-hearted, pure promise that was once made before, and is now made again. Frodo is promised once again by Aragorn's action of bending on one knee that all is still as it was, and may be even more so when such times are questioned.

This is a promise of love and loyalty; as Elijah Wood was quoted as saying in regards to Frodo and Sam, "It's the kind of love that says, 'No matter what, I'll be there for you.'" (not verbatim, but as close as I could manage it =) it's been a while since I read the quote. Sorry Elijah if you read this and see it's inaccurate! =) Whether or not you speak of Frodo and Sam, or Frodo and Aragorn, or whoever else you can think of in LOTR or not, the truth remains the same: love is love. Period. It doesn't have to be sexual, or perverse, or selfish or anything else. Real love is the love between friends, between families, between lovers, between God and His beloved souls. Love doesn't change from person to person. It just takes a different shape for a time, but it all has the same source. It's all the same love. It's all from the same God, who is Love. <3

So what is Aragorn doing here? What we all need to do at times: renew our promises of love and fidelity, whether it be in commitments to friends, family, the love of our life, our country, or especially our God. Let us not forget that these promises are eternal! Fear has no place in such a time as this! Let us not be afraid to declare such promises to the world, and say, "I've made this promise. I'm not sure how it's all going to end, but I do know that you won't be walking through this alone. I'm willing to give up my very life to save yours. I'm not afraid to let you go where I can't."

This promise is one indeed that is difficult to make, but it is one that NEEDS to be made. Let us step up, put away all these false gods and idols, and take up the only true cross, the Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Only there can be found true peace and freedom. Only there can God show Himself in fullness to you. Never stray from it. That place is the ultimate of grace and love and honor.

Much love =),

Love u babe. =) Stay strong. It will happen soon. Don't lose faith or falter now. =) It will all come to wonderful fruition in God's time. Don't forget that He is there for you, and so am I. =)
